It happens in an instant. One second you are cruising down the road, the windows are down, the wind is in your hair and your favorite song is on the radio. The next second you’re dazed and confused, the crash of metal and glass colliding is ringing in your ears. Every year 6 million Americans experience a car accident. While it’s always best to hope you never experience an auto accident it is always best to be prepared. Here are the four steps everyone needs to take if they are involved in an auto accident

    1. Always Exchange Driver Information and Involve the Police

It may not seem like a big deal at the time but never forget to exchange driver information with all parties involved in an accident. Oftentimes it can be tempting to just look at the state of the accident and if it doesn’t seem like a big deal, shake hands with the other driver and go on your way. This however, can be a big mistake for many reasons.

    • In many states failing to file a police report after an accident (even a fender bender) is illegal.
    • Failing to exchange information with a driver can make you liable for a hit-and-run charge.
    • Failure to collect information can make determining who is at fault for any accident or injury incredibly hard.

IF an accident occurs, take a moment to make sure you or your passengers aren’t injured. Check with the other driver to make sure they are safe. After that contact the police and begin exchanging information. Chances are your calm demeanor in this stressful situation can help out all parties involved.

    2. Document All Cars Involved With the Accident

After an accident and exchanging information your first instinct might be to hop in your car and get it out of the way of other motorists on the road. What everyone should do as long as they are able to do it safely is grab their fun and begin documenting the accident. With the rise of smartphones this has become easier than ever but too many people overlook this step. Pictures can help with the following things:

    • Photographs are the best way to document damages for accident claims.
    • Photos can provide key details that people may not think are important.
    • Without photos investigators have to make an educated guess as to how the accident has happened.

By documenting the scene of the accident you are helping to speed up your accident claim. Furthermore you can also show conditions that could have lead to an injury you suffered as the result of the accident.

    3. Get Checked for Injuries as Soon as Possible

Once information is exchanged, photos are taken and the authorities have been involved, an incredibly long and stressful event will be coming to a close. For many the temptation is to head directly home and try to put the events that just transpired out of your mind. If you can, your first step before heading home would be to go to a medical professional and get checked out. A medical professional can make sure there are no hidden injuries that were missed.

    4. Calling a Loganville, GA Car Accident Lawyer

After you’ve exchanged information, collected your evidence, contacted the authorities and received medical attention from a doctor your step is to contact your local Loganville, GA car accident lawyer. A lawyer can process the details of your accidents and help you plan your next course of action. Sometimes car accidents can lead to injuries that don’t manifest right away or issues that are unforeseen. A lawyer can help you navigate whatever comes up and protect you in the process.
