Everything You Should Know About Laser Hair Removal Before Getting It

The idea of not shaving for weeks but still not seeing any ingrown hair undoubtedly sounds appealing. Whether it be your face, legs, arms, or any other body part, shaving during your showers or scheduling waxing appointments can get tiring. So imagine not having to worry about this anymore. Laser hair removal is precisely designed for this concern. As the name suggests, the procedure directs a highly-concentrated laser to your hair follicles to remove unwanted hair and delay future growth.

While the premise of laser hair removal certainly sounds tempting, it is always best to research before undertaking any medical procedure. Before you get carried away with booking an appointment, get to know more about how you can prepare for the experience and what to expect from it. So, if you are planning to get the procedure anytime soon, here are some key things that may help you out.

    Shave Before Your Appointment

Yes, you read that correct! Your aesthetician or doctor will ask you to shave the area where you will be getting the procedure 24 hours before your appointment. Some clinics may charge an additional fee to do the shaving, but you can likely get assistance without paying more if you are dealing with a difficult-to-reach area.

While shaving is required before the procedure, you must not do other hair removal procedures like waxing, tweezing, or epilating. Laser hair removal aims to reach the hair root, so it naturally must be exposed for the process to work.

    Keep the Treatment Area Clean

Make sure to go to your appointment with the treatment area being free from makeup, deodorants, perfumes, creams, lotions, or any other product. The laser can react negatively to these products and cause issues like pigmentation in your skin.

    Avoid Sun Exposure

While this may be hard to do, you must avoid sun exposure to the treatment area. During the laser hair removal procedure, the light emitted is absorbed by your skin’s pigment to heat up and damage the follicle. Thus, you must retain your original skin colour as best as possible. Aside from avoiding sun exposure, dermatologists also recommend not using any tanning products at least two weeks before the treatment. Your skin may react sensitively to the laser if it is tanned since it might be mistaken as your hair root.

    Results Vary Per Case

Laser hair removal may be targeted for removing unwanted hair, but it is important to note that the results may vary per patient. Depending on your hair type or the treatment area, you may observe a different result on another person. As such, it is common for dermatologists to design specific treatment plans for your needs. In most cases, the procedure is done over many visits.

Despite being dubbed as a type of permanent hair removal, the procedure is more aptly described as a way of reducing unwanted hair growth in certain areas. Damaged hair follicles will still lead to regrowth, but you can expect the process to be much slower. Hair growth only stops if the follicle is destroyed completely.

Generally, getting any type of medical or beauty procedure comes with precautions. And, laser hair removal is no exception, as you will have to prepare for it and be warier about your post-treatment regime. That said, going to a certified dermatologist or laser technician is a must to ensure that you have a smooth and safe experience.
